Michigan Race of Champions
is a new form of motorsport which is a combination of US
style AutocrossWRC
Super Special,
Race of Champions and X-Games
Rally. Conducted on a 100% paved
course, cars start of at half a lap apart and pursue each other over
the course of a lap or two of the tight and twisty track. First car
back to their start position wins. Often an event will consist of
timed heats with the fastest 8 drivers going head to head in a knockout
competition to determine the overall winner. More seat time per dollar
than almost anything else you can do without a cage. Points are awarded
throughout the season to determine the season champion who this year
will win a set of Team Dynamics competition wheels..
Here's
a video
from SmashedTV4U of the forerunner to this series back when it was
called SuperRally-X.
History Founded
in 2008 as a collaboration between Team
Illuminata Motorsport and MI
SuperMoto to give rallycross competitors a greater challenge than
RallyCross and perhaps a bridge to full stage rally participation.
The original intention was to stage an X-Games
style event in Michigan for local competitors but it soon became clear
that getting
local drivers to jump their cars 75' over a chasm was going to be
difficult. So instead the team set about creating a crowd and driver
pleasing experience by combining the mixed surface format of Euro
style door to door rallycross with the safer format of WRC
Superspecial rally stage. This 25% dirt, 75% paved format has
evolved into an exciting all pavement head to head event for
grassroots competitors similar to the world renowned and televised
Race
of Champions.

Drivers must possess a currently valid automobile driver's license.
Drivers must be over 18 and have run at least 4 sanctioned motorsport
speed events. Drivers must wear a helmet, some kind of neck support
(available from the event coordinator at special
pricing), a substantial jacket or sweater, long pants, gloves
and closed toe shoes. Basically, no exposed skin. Production based
vehicles only. No SUVs or trucks. Convertibles are allowed but they
must have a roll bar and hard or soft top attached. No classes. Tires
are open. Mods are free. All body panels must be present. All lights
must be present or the original apertures covered with an alternative
material. Conspicuous number required on both sides of the car.
Everyone
who drives must sign the waiver.
Everyone must have their car checked by the scrutineer You can take
passengers but they must also be wearing the safety gear. Remember,
this is not auto or rallycross, there is a lot less run-off area or
room for mistakes so be careful. There are things to hit if you get
it wrong. Having said that, nobody yet has hit the wall or suffered
any other on course damage and speeds are the same or just a bit faster
than rallycross or autocross so you should all be good.
Event
Format We
run timed heats then knockout finals. We split the field into two
halves for the heats. If you are not in the half that is running then
you should be working somewhere, Those that are running need to line
up in one line at the track entrance for a parade lap. This is so
you can familiarize yourself with the course. When waved onto the
track parade round slowly noting any hazards or obstacles and where
the course goes. Remember that we have two starting positions so make
a note of those. Leave the track on the North side at track exit then
return through the paddock area SLOWLY and line up at track entrance
in TWO lines for your first run. Your first run is a practice run
and will not be timed. After that everyone gets six timed runs. Three
from the left start and three from the right start position. When
you are waved on to the track it's windows up and move smartly to
the left or right start position and stop where told by the starter.
We need to keep cars moving to stay on schedule so everyone can get
plenty
of seat time so be attentive. Heats are for time only and all runs
count.
Although
there will be another car on track half a lap apart from you at this
point you are just racing the clock. Timing is by hose or stop watch.
When your start light goes on get ready to start within a few seconds.
You start your run when the light goes out and the clock stops
when you get back to your start position and cross the finish line
or hose. Also, there will be a stop cone at the finish so you must
stop before hitting it. Please don't go nuts at the finish as there
are quite a concentration of workers in this area not to mention timing
equipment. Hitting this cone is a 2 second penalty as is hitting any
cone on course. Pointer cones don't count however. Hitting cones will
murder your time so I would suggest driving smoothly and within your
ability. Clean runs will win the day as in autocross and rallycross.
Usual cone rules apply: if it is knocked over or out of the box it's
a penalty. If it is upright and still touching any part of the box
it is not a penalty. Similar penalties exist for jumping the start,
missing a gate or cutting the course.
When
you have finished a run and the stop cone has been removed drive immediately
off the course via the track exit and slowly back to the track
entrance where a worker will have your time. Feel free to ask for
your time at this point too. He or she will then direct you to either
the left or right start lane for your next run if you have any left.
Once all your timed heats are done go and park your car in the paddock
and get ready to work the next heat. Good time to grab a drink and
go to the bathroom. People who have been working. Do the same and
get your cars ready. We will do the same parade lap, practice run
and timed runs format as the previous heat so I hope you were paying
attention.
If
you are working on the course your job will be to watch for cones
that get hit for the most part. If it's safe run out to the cone and
put it back in it's box. Remember there will likely be another car
coming through that same point in less than 30 seconds so be quick
or leave it where it is. One of the workers with a radio will call
timing to report the penalty. After the second heat we will break
for lunch and to add up times. 1 hour max please.
After
lunch the fastest eight from the heats go through to the knockout
round. This will be a two lap format against each other, not on time.
All cone penalties will still count including the stop cone so you
have been warned. First one over their prospective finish line wins
unless we have to
add on enough penalties that your wining margin is wiped out. We will
time your winning margin. Yes, we can do that. For these knockout
runs we will match the fastest qualifier against the slowest, second
fastest against the second slowest etc. Fastest of the pairing gets
to choose their preferred start position if they have one. Everyone
else is a worker so please don't wander off. We will keep track and
if you shirk your duties we will do something nasty to you when you
are least expecting it. See the worker chief for your assignment.
Eight qualifiers takes 7 runs to produce a winner and a runner up.
One more run to settle third and fourth. We usually have two prizes
so we might not bother with 3rd and 4th unless you cry or threaten
to sue. After the final let's gather for a debrief and awards ceremony
then please help put everything away. Series points: everyone who
gets through to the final gets 1 point then another point for every
win. That way we don't have to have run offs for the lesser places.
These will be added up at the end of the series to determine the series
champion.
